For Rt. Hon. Henry Nwawuba, the strength of modern Africa is inextricably linked to how honestly the continent honors its history and embraces its global diaspora. This conviction set the tone for an engaging and thought-provoking meeting hosted by the Executive Secretary at his National Assembly Library office, where he welcomed Professor Chidiebere Anelechi Ogbu, President of the African Diaspora Union (AFRIDU), and his delegation.
The visit offered a powerful platform to examine the profound questions of heritage, reparative justice, and the statutory recognition of African descendants returning home to their ancestral lands.
Championing the African Renaissance and Citizenship Reform
The dialogue between Rt. Hon. Nwawuba and Professor Ogbu was both deeply moving and strategically focused. Central to their discussions was AFRIDU’s ongoing advocacy for the landmark citizenship bill currently under consideration in the Nigerian Senate—a legislative effort designed to grant citizenship rights to descendants of the transatlantic slave trade who are returning to the continent.

Drawing from his extensive experience as a veteran federal lawmaker, Nwawuba offered seasoned guidance to the delegation, encouraging them to maintain constructive, evidence-based engagement with parliamentary committees. He stressed that bridging the gap between Africa and its diaspora is not merely a symbolic exercise; it is an economic, cultural, and moral necessity that demands clear statutory frameworks.
“Conversations such as these remind us that true progress begins with preserving our history, confronting its painful realities, and building meaningful bridges to our global family. When we create legislative pathways for our diaspora to return and contribute, we enrich the future of our continent.”

Honoring an Enduring Mission
The Executive Secretary warmly commended Professor Ogbu and his team for their visionary leadership in fighting for reparative justice and revitalizing African heritage across the globe.
Nwawuba remains passionately invested in seeing historical and diaspora-focused bills receive thoughtful, thorough consideration in the National Assembly and using his platform and institutional leadership to ensure that the journey toward justice, inclusion, and continental reconnection remains at the forefront of national discourse.
